I could launch into yet another rant about how the majority of American women are “plus size”.  I could rant about how how for every item of business wear clothing you find in a plus size in a typical department store that you’ll find dozens more in every other section.  While there are business women who are “Mary Kate and Ashley” sized – there are exponentially more who are “Delta Burke” sized – yet you’d never know it by the business wear selections you’ll find for plus size women.

Lately – I’m not NEEDING to rant about the injustice of it for one simple reason:

I’ve started shopping online for what I’ll wear to the office.

Now – the name of this site is “Plus Size Business Suits” – but you and I both know that you probably don’t need to wear a suit EVERY day to the office.

Well – I did when I was in outside sales – but that was because every day I meant I was making cold calls and I had to make my “best” impression.  However, that was back in the “old days” – you know – before the internet, email and Facebook ruled the world.

Today your fashion choices don’t have to be limited to business suits when you’re looking for what to wear to the office.

With all of this praise, I will heap a few burning coals on Lane Bryant for this reason only – the presentation of the clothing is often lacking.  By that I mean that many of the images on their website don’t present the clothes in their best light.  This is where the online experience for Lane Bryant gets a thumbs down.  The models are wearing poorly fitted clothes and therefore – it’s hard to tell how they will look on you when they do fit correctly.

Proper fit is essential to everyone – but especially for plus size women.  Not too big – not too small – but just right is our goal.   You won’t see clothing presented well in many of the images on the Lane Bryant site… so remember that as you’re shopping with them online.  In other words, its one of the few times the WORST case scenario is presented  via the images on the site.

The rule for skirt length for a professional women is that the hem of her skirt MUST NOT be above the knee. The ideal hem line is mid-calf because at that length, when you sit down the skirt will “ride” up to just below your knee.

There are no exceptions to this rule in a professional setting.

A-line shapes can be flattering for a full figured woman. However, the professional plus size woman should avoid skirts with pleats of ANY kind. Your best bet is a skirt that falls in a straight line from the hip (just as with pants).

For example, if you’re employed in any industry that has to do with finances… such as financial planning, banking or even insurance, then it will be a rare occasion indeed when you can wear something colorful or flowery to work.
